LÂM ĐỒNG — The 2026 'Happy Chess Pieces' project officially launched its fifth season in Lâm Đồng Province on Tuesday, continuing its efforts to promote intellectual and physical development among children in disadvantaged communities.
The latest programme is being implemented at a charity class in Darahoa Village, where 50 children from underprivileged backgrounds are taking part.
Founded and led by Dr Nguyễn Trà Giang, Vice President of the Việt Nam Chess Federation, the project is a community-based sports initiative aimed at widening access to chess and educational opportunities.
At its fifth stop in Lâm Đồng, organisers have focused on building a structured learning environment, ensuring participants have access to training conditions comparable to those at established chess clubs.

Notably, the programme’s operational costs - including training equipment, uniforms and daily meals - are fully supported through socialised funding, with contributions from businesses such as The Grand Ho Tram and KingViet Education.
KingViet Education, a member of the Việt Nam Chess Federation, has committed all profits from the sale of two sports fashion collections at national tournaments to support the project.
Meanwhile, Walt Power, CEO of The Grand Ho Tram, said: "Chess is not just a sport, but also a great environment to cultivate character, logical thinking, and discipline. The decision to partner with 'Happy Chess' is a testament to The Grand Ho Tram's long-term commitment to nurturing Vietnamese intellectual talent.
"We believe that every child, regardless of their circumstances, deserves an equal educational opportunity to confidently build their future."
Beyond chess training, the programme also incorporates physical activities, including Zumba sessions, as part of a broader approach to supporting both mental and physical development.
According to Dr Giang, the fifth season in Lâm Đồng marks an initial step towards building a model that combines intellectual and physical education for disadvantaged children, aligned with international standards. The project has received support from the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and Chess.com, one of the world’s largest online chess platforms.

With continued backing from the business community, organisers aim to expand the programme nationwide, including the development of a network of volunteer coaches and the distribution of chess sets to children in difficult circumstances.
Through chess and physical education, the initiative is expected to contribute to broader efforts to promote grassroots sports development while providing children in remote areas with additional learning opportunities and skills for the future. — VNS
