HUẾ – Visitors flocked to historic sites in Huế city on August 19 as free admission was offered to mark the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

The Huế Monuments Conservation Centre announced free entry for all Vietnamese citizens on August 19 and September 2, with opening hours from 6 am to 5.30 pm.

On the morning of August 19, streams of visitors began arriving early at the Imperial City of Hue (Đại Nội). The centre deployed staff to guide tourists through the site.

For many Vietnamese visitors, the initiative carries special meaning as the nation prepares to commemorate the historic anniversaries.

Lê Thị Lý, a 51-year-old teacher from Quảng Trị Province, travelled with her family to Huế early in the morning. The family joined visitors at the Imperial Citadel of Huế on August 19, saying their trip was meaningful as the country marks the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

They hoped the younger generation could learn more about the site’s historic role, particularly the abdication of Emperor Bảo Đại on August 30, 1945, which marked the end of the monarchy and the start of a new era.

The festive atmosphere in Huế also drew attention from foreign tourists. Francois, a French visitor, noted the excitement surrounding the national celebrations and the vibrant traditional dress on display, alongside the peaceful setting by the Perfume River.

In addition to the Imperial City, other iconic sites such as the royal tombs of Tự Đức, Khải Định and Minh Mạng, Thiên Mụ Pagoda, Quốc Học School, Trường Tiền Bridge and the riverside landscapes also drew large crowds.

Huế has recorded strong tourism growth this year. In the first seven months of 2025, the city welcomed over 4 million visitors, up 71 per cent year-on-year, including more than 1.2 million international arrivals (up 41 per cent). Tourism revenue reached an estimated 7.45 trillion VNĐ (US$315.5 million), a 56 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2024.
