LÂM ĐỒNG — Việt Nam have for the first time won a place in Group II of the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania next year after their success at this year's tournament, which took place over the weekend in Lâm Đồng Province.

The host athletes were among eight teams in Zone A of the Group III Asia/Oceania competition on the NovaWorld Phan Thiết tennis courts.

They successfully defeated all three rivals – Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Iraq – 3-0 in the Group B fixtures.

In the promotion playoffs, they beat Nepal, the top Group B team, 2-1 to secure the only Zone A slot in Group II next season.

According to Việt Nam Tennis Federation (VTF) General Secretary Nguyễn Hồng Sơn, the promotion was a milestone in the team's history. The home-ground advantage and support from the sponsors, including Gainbridge and Wilson, along with athletes' thorough preparation played key role in the team's remarkable performance.

Next year they will gain the opportunity to compete against stronger opponents at the most prestigious competition for international women's teams organised by World Tennis.

VTF presented VNĐ300 million (US$11,600) to the team for the achievement and promised to create favourable conditions to help them train for even better international results. — VNS
