HCM CITY — Việt Nam’s U17 women’s team beat Kyrgyzstan 2-0 in their final Group D qualifier on Sunday to secure a place at the 2027 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup finals.

The hosts finished top of the group with a perfect nine points from three matches, scoring 28 goals without conceding under Japanese coach Okiyama Masahiko.

Việt Nam went into the decisive match at Bà Rịa Stadium needing only a draw to qualify, while Kyrgyzstan had to win to take first place.

The visitors started aggressively, using their physical advantage and long balls to put pressure on Việt Nam’s defence. The hosts initially struggled to build their attacks but gradually gained control and created several chances.

Hà Vi came close to opening the scoring in the 23rd minute, hitting the post. Two minutes later, Việt Nam took the lead when Vi produced a skilful move inside the box before setting up Nguyễn Thị Huyền Trang for a close-range finish.

The goal eased the pressure on the hosts and forced Kyrgyzstan to push forward in search of an equaliser.

Việt Nam increased their lead in the 55th minute. Following a move down the right flank, Trang delivered an accurate cross for Vi to head home at the far post, leaving goalkeeper Sezimbubu unable to make the save.

With a two-goal cushion, Việt Nam managed the pace of the game and continued to look for openings. Trương Khánh Chi missed a chance from close range in the 85th minute, while Vi failed to beat the Kyrgyzstan goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation a minute later.

The 2-0 victory completed Việt Nam’s dominant qualifying campaign. They opened with a 6-0 win over Palestine before thrashing the Northern Mariana Islands 20-0 and defeating Kyrgyzstan in the decisive match to claim the group’s sole qualifying spot.

After the match, Masahiko said qualification was the result of the team’s preparation, training and collective efforts.

He said the coaching staff had carefully analysed Kyrgyzstan’s previous two matches, focusing on their use of long balls, aerial play and physical strength.

Despite that preparation, Việt Nam struggled to implement their game plan in the first half. However, the opening goal proved a turning point, allowing the players to grow in confidence and take greater control.

Okiyama said the coaching staff then made tactical and personnel changes, introducing players with pace and technical ability to increase pressure and maintain control.

Looking ahead to the finals, he said the team would continue to improve technically and prepare a specific game plan once the draw was made. — VNS
